In the late 1950s, a San Francisco businessman began to become a traveler, and an importer sold hand-woven willow shiploads from one of the city's pillars. When the boxes were unloaded, the locals lined up in a row and invited them. Even curious tourists were attracted by the unique and unusual.

Given the fact that such an open-minded audience was looking forward to his return, it only made sense to start a business. And in 1958, he opened the first store in San Francisco's famous Fisherman's Wharf, calling it Cost Plus Holiday Gifts. The store quickly became a destination for those looking for original and handmade items from around the world. The items were sold at a cost-plus ten percent - hence the name Cost Plus Holiday Gifts!
